Bernkasteler Friedhof

During a holiday on the Moselle we visited the beautiful and authentic Bernkastel-Keus. Just outside the old center, my attention was drawn to an old cemetery. It was on a hill, not particularly large, and had a magical effect on me.

About the cemetery

Originating during the plague outbreak, this terrace-shaped cemetery was built on the hill outside the village center. On July 20, 1673, the cemetery was consecrated by Archbishop Johan Heinrich Anethan. In 1804 the cemetery was continued as a city cemetery. Many originally residents of Bernkastel have found a final resting place here. Since 1901, the church has been ringing the bell for every deceased person when he is escorted from the church to the cemetery.
